John Dorlus' and Team D’s

My Best Life

Beginning December 2020, I was contracted to compose the score for the currently in-development farming simulator game: My Best Life. Taking inspiration and roots from staples of the genre, like Harvest Moon, and Stardew Valley, the soundtrack-writing process for the project has spanned a wonderful variety of genres and styles, at the discretion of director, John Dorlus.

When we began discussing the OST, one aspect John wanted to emphasize was a sense of “oneness” in the music, with a repeated theme and motif running throughout the entire score. The additional challenge featured was that, like similar life-simulator games, there would be a seasonal weather and environment system, with the various areas throughout the world visually changing over time.

This led to a structure where each individual zone and place would be connected through a primary leitmotif, but also feature its own unique theme that would develop and bend depending on the time and season. Likewise, many of the individual zones feature specific and specialized genres. The more urban and built up city areas are styled after EDM, and electronica, while the more rural and rugged biomes feature more twangy guitar and country music. The beach and watery areas are tinged in reggae, while a variety of tracks are built, and feature full western, traditional orchestral ensembles.
